A website that lets you buy Europe-wide railway tickets has worked out how to make the biggest train travel savings.
In the UK, advance tickets can often be booked until as late as 7pm the day before travel and you can save cash compared to a ‘walk-up’ ticket. The researchers from Loco found the greatest saving, of 54%, was gained when booking ten weeks ahead in the UK.
The cheapest Eurostar tickets are available 180 days before your journey and Wednesday afternoon seems to offer the best price. You have a 31% chance of getting a Eurostar ticket under £50 then. There’s only 3% likelihood of that on a Friday evening and no chance at all on Sunday night.
They also found that travelling by train on Wednesdays was approximately 16% cheaper on average than starting a holiday on a Friday. You’ll make the biggest saving with Renfe in Spain, between 60 and 120 days before travel. The cheapest French TGV and Italian Trenitalia tickets are found three months before your journey.
